E.C.R.E. Discipline Policy
As part of our attempt to provide support to our ECRE volunteers, the following is our Discipline Policy for ECRE:
ECRE is our catechetical program for preschool (3-5 years old), which seeks to foster their growth in a wider faith community. The ECRE experience is accomplished in a classroom environment and thus the children are expected to work in the realm of classroom standards. The classroom must be free of
excessively disruptive behavior so that the ECRE volunteer is free to concentrate on teaching. Therefore, the following is the standard operating procedure for discipline.
1st Incident
- The Child will be escorted from the classroom to the Director. She/he will remain with the Director until the end of the session.
- The Director and teacher will speak with the parents after Mass.
- The child will be permitted to return to class the next week.
2nd Incident
- The Child will be escorted from the classroom to the Director. She/he will remain with the Director until the end of the session.
- The Director and teacher will speak with the parents after Mass.
- The parent(s) must accompany the child to the next session.
- If behavior has improved, the child may return to class the following week unaccompanied.
3rd Incident
- The Child will be escorted from the classroom to the Director. She/he will remain with the Director until the end of the session.
- The Director and teacher will speak with the parents after Mass.
- The child will not be permitted back into the program the remainder of the school year.
Side Notes:
- It is important for parents to realize that not all pre-K children are "ready" for a classroom experience. Classroom means a structured environment.
- There is a distinct difference between classroom management and discipline.
Our volunteers are asked to manage a classroom, which entails setting class rules, adhering to those rules, and conducting class. Discipline is to be handled by the parents.
