Eucharist & First Reconciliation

In the Diocese of Toledo, every child, whether enrolled in a Catholic school, a religious education program or being homeschooled, upon coming to the age of reason will be catechized for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist.  First Reconciliation must be received before the child is catechized for First Eucharist.  St. Michael the Archangel Parish offers this preparation to those entering 2nd grade.

Parents are required to attend a program of preparation to assist them in their role as primary educators (for their first child only).  “Children’s preparation…begins in the home.  The family has the most important role in communicating the Christian and human values that format the foundation for a child’s understanding of the Eucharist” (NDC 126).  St. Michael the Archangel Parish holds sessions in the beginning of each school year.  Days and times will be publicized in the Sunday bulletin.

Preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist include:

1. Attendance at a catechetical instruction program (SMS, Discipleship, or an approved Homeschool program) during the child’s 1st and 2nd grade years.

2. Completion of the Final Preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.  This is distinct for the catechetical instruction program.  We do this as a home study.
      a. A Reconciliation book is to be completed by the child, with the assistance of the parents in the fall semester.
      b. A Eucharist book is to be completed by the child, with the assistance of the parents in the spring semester.

3. A pre-First Communion parish-based retreat experience.

A communal penance service for those celebrating First Reconciliation will be held in November or December.  First Communion will be held the first Sunday of May.
